The impacts of near-bed flow characteristics on river bed sediment transport under ice-covered conditions in 2016–2021

چکیده
Global climate change has been projected to affect hydrology, the ice-covered flow period and river morphology (including changed sediment transport conditions) in northern high-latitude regions. To understand impact of expected shortening on bedload transport, one needs present these rivers with annually occurring ice cover. Thus, aims are (1) define impacts cover near-bed characteristics during hydrologically varying years, (2) analyse mid-winter bed potential. The analyses based Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP: 2016–21) Velocimeter (ADV: 2020–21) measurements performed conditions sandy small (circa 20 m wide) Pulmanki River Finnish Lapland. Despite winter, occurs even harshest conditions. critical velocities shear were exceeded winters 2016–2021, occurred according measurements. Three different situations regarding velocity conditions: high measured discharges indicate throughout meander bend; low cause (3) having intermediate potential being higher at upstream inlet apex sections bend but clearly lower downstream apex. confinement by cover, i.e. bottom-fast ice, explains variation. highest section a symmetrical bend, where measurement cross-sections narrower shallower. lowest apex, channel from relatively narrow wider deeper.

Formation of a sandy near-bed transport layer from a fine-grained bed under oscillatory flow
[1] Bed surface coarsening was found to be an important effect for the formation of ripples and the dynamics of the boundary layer above a predominantly silt-sized sediment bed (median particle size equal to 26 mm; 20% fine sand, 70% silt, 10% clay) under oscillatory flow (with orbital velocities of 0.32–0.52 m/s) in a laboratory wave duct. Following bed liquefaction, substantial winnowing of t...
متن کاملStochastic modeling in sediment dynamics: Exner equation for planar bed incipient bed load transport conditions
[1] Even under flow equilibrium conditions, river bed topography continuously evolves with time, producing trains of irregular bed forms. The idea has recently emerged that the variability in the bed form geometry results from some randomness in sediment flux. In this paper, we address this issue by using the Exner equation and a population exchange model derived in an earlier paper. In this mo...
متن کاملCritical conditions of bed sediment entrainment due to debris flow
The present study describes entrainment characteristics of bed material into debris flow, based on flume tests, numerical and dimensional analyses. Flume tests are conducted to investigate influences of bed sediment size on erosion rate by supplying debris flows having unsaturated sediment concentration over erodible beds. Experimental results show that the erosion rate decreases monotonically ...
متن کاملSediment Transport in Unsteady Flow Conditions
Sediment transport under unsteady flow condition is studied experimentally. In the first step, sediment transport under different steady flow conditions was measured and an empirical equation was derived for its calculation. In the next step, two continuous and three stepwise hydrographs were generated in the flume, and their sediment transport rate was measured. The continuous hydrographs were...
متن کاملUncertainties in Evaluation of the Sediment Transport Rates in Typical Coarse-Bed Rivers in Iran
Flow and sediment transport processes are different and more complex in coarse-bed rivers than in sand-bed rivers. The main goal of the present study is to evaluate different modes of sediment transport using different hydrometric and hydraulic methods, and to address the major uncertainties. Four river reaches were selected as representatives of coarse-bed rivers in the Northwest of Iran. A se...
